    TOP PICK
Something very special happens within the pages of Red, White & Royal Blue, Casey McQuiston’s dazzling debut. What begins as an irreverent chronicle of the first female president’s reelection year through the eyes of Alex Claremont-Diaz, the FSOTUS (first son of the United States) becomes an account of the love story of said FSOTUS and England’s Henry, Prince of Wales. This modern fairy tale unfolds in a gossipy, insider tone until emotion takes over and McQuiston gives us an aching glimpse of what it is to want someone you believe you cannot have. Yes, Red, White & Royal Blue is funny and fun, and the family and political dynamics feel spot-on, but it’s the frank and unforgettable romance between these two young men that will compel readers to start it all over again when faced with the last page. It’s that hard to say goodbye to this couple.

Helen Hoang introduces a unique and delightful couple in The Bride Test. In Vietnam, struggling single mom Esme Tran meets a woman who presents an intriguing proposal: spend a summer in California to see if she’ll suit the stranger’s handsome, successful son. It’s a risk, but Esme is willing to take a chance at a new life. Her intended, Khai Diep, is a mystery to her, and the autistic Khai finds his potential bride just as difficult to understand. As the two come to know each other, feelings between them grow—the very feelings Khai is convinced his autism precludes. This emotional courtship-of-convenience story has a fantastic sense of humor and a stellar cast of sidekicks, but it’s the exploration of the inner life of quiet, contained Khai and the insecurities and determination of Esme that set it apart. Two words sum up this romance: just lovely.

The suspense is high-octane and the sexual chemistry explosive in Every Last Breath by Juno Rushdan. Covert government operative Maddox Kinkade takes on her latest mission with her usual zeal, but the civilian she’s tasked to recruit turns out to be her first love, Cole Matthews, whom she thought for years was dead. The two must set aside their former relationship and all the recriminations that go with it as they partner to stop a lethal world threat. The detailed plans and gritty action are authentic and exciting, and scenes from the point of view of a villain bent on vengeance add more chill to Rushdan’s already thrilling plot. Readers will feel immersed in the action as this fast-paced story rockets to a satisfying conclusion that still leaves questions for future entries in the series. Buckle up for this romantic thrill ride!

A covert operations agent must confront her demons as she partners with a man from her past to intercept a biological weapon in this debut romance. Maddox Kinkade hasn't had it easy in nearly a decade. She lost her fiance and betrayed his family in an effort to gain her CIA-agent father's love. Instead, the process nearly killed her with grief, and she steeled herself to become an operative for the Gray Box, a government-sanctioned agency that specializes in secret world-saving missions. Her latest assignment is stopping the sale of a new strain of smallpox, and the first step is tracking down a man named Cole Matthews. But not only is Cole resistant to working with any sort of government agency, he also turns out to be the man Maddox loved and inadvertently double-crossed nine years ago. To complicate matters even more than a fiance coming back from the dead and a world on the brink of biological warfare is a string of assassinations occurring around the globe. Cole and Madd ox have to contend with the dangers of acquiring a bioweapon while addressing the baggage that tore them apart as younger adults. Rushdan is a fresh, exciting voice with a talent for action-packed pacing and complicated entanglements. With a dizzying amount of jargon and acronyms for the reader to keep straight, the book sometimes gets bogged down by bureaucracy, though the scenes between Cole and Maddox are thick with tension. It's a promising start to both a new romantic suspense series and a new writer in the genre, as all the separate subplots reach their aha moments and come together in an edge-of-your seat conclusion. A romantic thriller that handily juggles emotional intensity and a heart-pounding, James Bond-ian adventure. Copyright Kirkus 2019 Kirkus/BPI Communications. All rights reserved.

Rushdan's fast-paced, gripping debut will hold readers' attention from start to finish. When Gray Box, a top-secret offshoot of the CIA, learns that weaponized smallpox will be sold at an upcoming auction for high-profile criminal buyers, officer Maddox Kinkad is assigned to recruit Cole Matthews as an asset to infiltrate the auction and acquire the lethal weapon. Cole turns out to be Nikolai Resnikov, the man Maddox loved and lost nine years earlier. Her CIA father learned that Nikolai's family was Russian mafia, and Nikolai faked his own death in order to protect his family and her. Shocked to find Nikolai alive and well, Maddox hides her broken heart and prioritizes her mission. Meanwhile, this unexpected reunion makes Nikolai realize he has never stopped loving Maddox. The two highly skilled protagonists race against the clock to avert mass destruction, while sexual tension flares and their love rekindles. Rushdan portrays her mastermind criminal with welcome nuances—he longs to destroy the U.S. government to avenge his loved ones' deaths—and leaves the identity of an agency mole unresolved, which will have readers eagerly waiting for the sequel to this arresting romantic thriller.
