Banana cream pie murder / Joanne Fluke.

Summary:

After an extravagant honeymoon, Hannah's eager to settle down in Lake Eden and turn domestic daydreams into reality. But when her mother's neighbor is discovered murdered in the condo downstairs, reality becomes a nightmarish investigation. Victoria Bascomb, once a renowned stage actress, was active in the theater community during her brief appearance in town ... and made throngs of enemies along the way. Did a random intruder murder the woman as police claim, or was a deadlier scheme at play? As Hannah peels through countless suspects and some new troubles of her own, solving this crime - and living to tell about it - might prove trickier than mixing up the ultimate banana cream pie...

Returning from her honeymoon, Hannah Swensen Barton is immediately swept into another murder investigation after her mother, Dolores, finds the body of her downstairs neighbor, Tori Bascomb, and asks Hannah to find her killer. Assisted by husband Ross, other family members, and former suitor Norman, Hannah races to beat Detective Mike Kingston to the solution, even to the point of removing the police tape to search the scene of the murder. Fans of the long-running cozy series will enjoy catching up with Hannah and the rest of Lake Eden's residents as well as perusing the numerous, delicious-sounding recipes. However, the murderer's identity is readily apparent, and Hannah's attempts to hide evidence from her good friend Mike seem childish, unethical, and unrealistic. The story ends with a cliff-hanger that will surely lead to Hannah's next adventure. Copyright 2017 Booklist Reviews.

Newlywed Hannah Swensen Barton (Wedding Cake Murder, 2016, etc.) is disconcerted to find that her husband Ross' favorite dessert is a clue in a murder investigation.Hannah is barely off the honeymoon cruise ship when her mother breaks disturbing news: after hearing some anguished screams, Delores has found downstairs neighbor Victoria Bascomb dead on the floor of her living room. A banana cream pie and two dessert plates laid out on the actress's coffee table suggest that Tori must have known her killer. Could it be her brother, Richard, Lake Eden's philandering mayor? Or Tricia Barthel, one of the students who come to Tori's apartment for acting lessons? Could Tori's shifty New York business manager have done her in? Or one of the Lake Eden Players whose Thanksgiving production she was directing? Each time Hannah has an idea who did it, her suspect produces an alibi. Her sister Michelle moves into Hannah's spare room and agrees to direct the play in Tori's place; Michelle ag rees to help out at The Cookie Jar while Hannah spends her days sleuthing; and Hannah's partner, Lisa, keeps customers entertained by acting out the murder scene. But with leads disappearing as fast as her Cheery Cherry Cookies, Hannah's almost tempted to turn the whole investigation over to her ex-boyfriend Detective Mike Kingston and go back to making Pumpkin Scones with Sugared Cinnamon Glaze. Baking maven Fluke wants to have her cake and eat it too. Grafting Hannah's new relationship with Ross onto her lingering attachment to two previous boyfriends, her family of origin, her business, and the rest of the Lake Eden crew leaves precious little room for mystery. • Publishers Weekly Reviews : PW Reviews 2017 January #5

At the outset of bestseller Fluke's subpar 21st Hannah Swensen mystery (after 2016's Christmas Caramel Murder), Hannah's mother, Delores Swensen, hears screams and then gunshots coming from the residence of retired stage actress Tori Bascomb, a friend and neighbor. Might Tori be giving an acting lesson in her home studio? When Dolores goes over to Tori's place, she's horrified to find the actress lying dead on the studio rug. Fortunately, amateur sleuth Hannah is about to return home to Lake Eden, Minn., from her honeymoon with Ross Baron. With her customary knack for figuring things out, Hannah follows hunches until she comes to a conclusion, but the motive is a little harder to determine. Hannah and former suitor Det. Mike Kingston then make an alarming discovery, leading to a cliffhanger ending. An overly simplistic story and inconsistent behavior make this less effective than other books in the series, but fans will certainly enjoy the abundance of tasty recipes.
