Summary, etc.:
In the spring of 1855, the Dickinson family is on the edge of ruin. The family's resources have been squandered by a reckless brother who holds all of them financially hostage, and the enslaved workers are visited by a Canadian abolitionish who pushes them to escape. Bry, who tried to flee once before with disastrous results, is the first to leave and his pursuit of freedom takes him on a dangerous quest to find his mother and child in Canada. Meanwhile, the Dickinsons make an escape of another kind, cutting their losses in a wagon en route to the West that will eventually be loaded onto a Missouri river boat for a dark adventure. Patriarch and preacher, John Dickinson, is involved in a shameful secret, leaving his wife to navigate the hard road towards an uncertain future, while their thirteen-year-old son has his own lonely odyssey wiht his pet bear. Forests and rivers prevail in this story, and each person will be tested on journeys that are mythic in composition and scope.
