This is the memoir of Johnny Grant (1833-1907), a Canadian Métis (mixed European and Native American) fur-trader who lived and died on the northwestern frontier. He gives accounts of trading, mining, and ranching activities in Montana and Idaho, the Indian wars of the region, the Riel Resistance of 1869/1870 (in which a Métis provisional government of the northwest came into conflict with the central Canadian government), and the politics and economics of Manitoba.
