Dr. Alex Davenport, rather a cold fish, and his attractive young wife, Marie, have been in Marseilles, attending a medical convention. At its end, they go on to Nice for a brief holiday before returning to New York. But almost at once they are caught up in an appalling accident. While Alex is swimming in the Bay of Angels, a motorboat looms up out of nowhere and crashes into him, smashing his skull. Still alive, he is rushed to the hospital. But all the skill of a team of doctors can't save him. He is pronounced dead, wheeled off to the morgue, and Marie finds herself in the bitterly ironic position of a woman who has lost the husband she had been planning to leave for another man.
